What Makes Tourmaline So Special?

The name “Tourmaline” originates from the Sinhalese word "turmali," meaning “mixed stones.” This is fitting, as tourmalines exhibit a unique pleochroism—the ability to change color depending on the viewing angle.

Varieties of Tourmaline

Tourmalines occur in a wide range of colors, from black and red to green and even multi-colored varieties.

Rubellite – The Red Tourmaline

Rubellite tourmalines range from deep red to pink, with some variations showing a hint of violet. The most valuable rubellites resemble the rich red of rubies. Significant deposits exist in the USA, Madagascar, and Brazil.

Verdelite – The Green Tourmaline

Verdelite appears in various shades of green, sometimes resembling emeralds. A rare sub-type, Chrome Tourmaline, owes its rich green color to chromium and vanadium. The finest verdelite is sourced from Russia, Madagascar, the USA, and Brazil.

Indicolite – The Blue Tourmaline

Indicolite is known for its striking blue hues, which may include greenish undertones. It is much rarer than red or green tourmalines, with notable deposits found in Namibia and Afghanistan.

Paraíba Tourmaline – The Neon Blue Gem

The Paraíba tourmaline, named after the Brazilian state where it was discovered, is one of the most valuable varieties due to its intense neon-turquoise hue. Similar neon-blue tourmalines have also been found in select mines in Afghanistan.

Watermelon Tourmaline

One of the most beloved varieties, Watermelon Tourmaline, features a striking pink center with a green outer edge, resembling the colors of a watermelon. Each stone has a unique color pattern. This variety is primarily found in Brazil, Mozambique, Nigeria, and Madagascar.

Other notable varieties include:

  • Achroite: A rare colorless tourmaline.
  • Canary Tourmaline: A bright yellow variety.
  • Cat’s Eye Tourmaline: A chatoyant variety displaying a luminous line.
  • Schorl: The deep black tourmaline, often used for grounding energy.

Where Is Tourmaline Found?

Tourmaline deposits are found worldwide, with some of the finest specimens coming from Brazil. Other significant sources include Nigeria, Pakistan, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Afghanistan.

Tourmaline Quality Criteria

The value of a tourmaline is determined by its color, clarity, carat weight, and cut.

Clarity

Tourmalines are classified into three clarity types:

  • Type I: Eye-clean stones with no visible inclusions.
  • Type II: Stones with minor inclusions.
  • Type III: Stones that almost always contain visible inclusions.

Unlike diamonds, minor inclusions in tourmalines do not significantly impact their value.

Carat Weight

The weight of a tourmaline is measured in carats (1 carat = 0.2 grams). Larger stones are more valuable, especially if they exhibit intense color and high clarity.

Cut

The ideal cut for a tourmaline depends on its natural crystal formation. Green and blue tourmalines often form elongated crystals, making rectangular or step cuts the best options to preserve the color and maximize weight retention.

Tourmaline Jewelry – A Spectrum of Possibilities

Tourmalines are incredibly versatile and used in various jewelry designs, including:

  • Pendants
  • Rings
  • Stud Earrings & Drop Earrings
  • Necklaces & Colliers
  • Bracelets & Bangles

Tourmalines pair beautifully with gold (especially white and yellow gold), silver, and platinum. When combined with diamonds or other gemstones, they create dazzling and unique jewelry pieces.

How Much Does Tourmaline Jewelry Cost?

Tourmaline jewelry is available in a wide price range. While smaller pieces can be found for under €100, exclusive high-carat tourmaline jewelry, such as brilliant-cut tourmaline necklaces, can be significantly more expensive.

When to Wear Tourmaline Jewelry?

  • Everyday Wear: Subtle tourmaline studs or delicate bracelets add elegance to casual outfits.
  • Special Occasions: Large tourmaline earrings or brilliant-cut necklaces make a glamorous statement at weddings, galas, or birthdays.
  • Celebrations & Milestones: Anniversary celebrations, graduations, or career milestones are perfect opportunities to wear eye-catching tourmaline jewelry.

How to Match Tourmaline Jewelry with Your Outfit

  • Green Tourmalines: Pair beautifully with classic black dresses, white shirts, or dark blue jeans.
  • Blue Tourmalines: Complement silver-toned evening gowns and formal suits.
  • Pink Tourmalines: Perfect for romantic outfits like lace dresses or soft pastel sweaters.
  • Watermelon Tourmalines: A great match for bohemian or summer dresses.
  • Black Tourmalines: Ideal for gothic-inspired or minimalist monochrome styles.

How to Care for Tourmaline Jewelry

  • Clean with a mild soap solution and lukewarm water.
  • Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners.
  • Store separately in a padded jewelry box to prevent scratches.
  • Keep away from harsh chemicals like ammonia and chlorine.
  • Remove jewelry before engaging in sports or household chores.

The Symbolism of Tourmaline

Tourmaline is associated with positivity, protection, and self-confidence. Its vibrant colors are believed to shield against negativity and promote emotional well-being.

As the birthstone for October (alongside opal), tourmaline has been cherished since ancient times. Even Alexander the Great was known to wear tourmaline-adorned jewelry.
